This exceptional microlot is the result of meticulous cultivation and dedication, and we are proud to partner with Sunrise Trading to bring this distinctive coffee to you.

Tasting Notes
The Lily Ortiz Washed Process coffee has a delightful array of flavors that unfold with each sip. The bright, fruity notes of peach, raisins, and apple are balanced with a smooth base of caramel, almond, and butter, adding richness and complexity. The finish is enhanced by layers of maple, honey, and a hint of anise, with a subtle herbal note that lingers. This coffee offers a smooth body and a honeyed acidity, making it perfect for both casual drinkers and seasoned coffee enthusiasts.

Roasting and Brewing Recommendations
We recommend roasting this coffee to City to City+ to preserve its complex sweetness and fruity brightness. This range enhances its natural acidity and brings out its best flavors. For brewing, we suggest methods such as espresso, pour-over, AeroPress, and French press, each of which highlights the coffee's nuanced profile. Whether you enjoy the bright clarity of a pour-over or the rich depth of an espresso, this coffee adapts beautifully to different brewing styles.

Sustainability Through Direct Trade
As part of our ongoing commitment to sourcing high-quality coffee with a focus on sustainability, we’re pleased to share this microlot through our partnership with Sunrise Trading. Sunrise works directly with smallholder farmers, ensuring that each cup of coffee supports fair pricing and eco-friendly farming practices. This approach not only helps preserve traditional farming methods but also ensures the sustainability of the farming communities.

The Story of Lily Ortiz and Her Coffee
Cultivated at 6,070 feet above sea level in the Alto Gramazú region of Pasco, Perú, this single-origin microlot from Lily Ortiz reflects the diverse flavors of the land. Lily Ortiz: Empowering Communities Through Coffee

At the heart of this exceptional microlot is Lily Ortiz, a passionate and dedicated coffee farmer from the Yanesha Native Community in Tsachopen - Alto Gramazú, Pasco, Peru. Lily is not only a cultivator of some of the finest specialty coffee in the region, but also a key figure in preserving the traditional agricultural practices of her community.

The Role of Women in Coffee Farming

Lily’s work represents the growing presence and influence of women in the coffee industry, particularly in regions like Peru where coffee farming is often a male-dominated field. Her leadership is a testament to the role women are playing in shifting the dynamics of coffee production, driving sustainability, and creating direct connections with the global market. Through her work, Lily has become a role model for other women in the Yanesha community, encouraging them to embrace coffee farming as a livelihood while maintaining their cultural traditions.

As a farmer in the Yanesha Native Community, Lily’s efforts go beyond simply growing coffee. She is deeply committed to preserving the community's heritage and ensuring the ecological sustainability of their farming practices. Coffee is more than just a crop; it is an integral part of the Yanesha identity, offering a connection to the land and their ancestors.

A Sustainable Approach to Coffee Farming

Lily’s coffee is shade-grown, a practice that helps protect the biodiversity of the area while ensuring the long-term health of the soil. Her coffee is cultivated in a sustainable manner, with a focus on eco-friendly practices that preserve the rich natural resources of the region. By utilizing traditional farming methods, Lily and her community are able to grow coffee that not only meets high standards of quality but also contributes to the preservation of their environment.

Through her relationship with Sunrise Trading, Lily is able to directly connect her community’s coffee with global buyers, ensuring that the farmers are fairly compensated for their hard work and commitment to quality. This direct trade partnership also fosters a sense of empowerment, as the farmers are able to maintain control over their crops, ensuring the sustainability of their operations for years to come.
